MHS grad Hughes returning to home state for pigskin classic By Denton Ramsey, Managing Editor Devon Hughes, a 2005 Marlin High School graduate and former Bulldogs football standout, is now attending college at Henderson State University in Arkansas. In addition to getting an education, Hughes is continuing his pigskin career as well - this time in an HSU uniform. Hughes was the only freshman on the team to start his first year at HSU, and he recently completed his 2006 sophomore season as the nation's top defending cornerback in Division II football. With 27 passes defended, including a record-setting 22 pass breakups, it's easy to see why Hughes is so highly honored. In addition to his national accolades, Hughes was a second-team All Gulf South Conference pick with 54 tackles for the year, 23 of which were solo. Hughes was also named honorable mention All-American to Don Hansen's Football Gazette and the NCAA honored Hughes, along with HSU, with a plaque for the most passes defended in the nation in Division II football. Earlier this month, Hughes was named a Pre-Season All-American and will start his 2007 season in his home state of Texas in the Round Rock Foot Classic. HSU will battle Texas College on Aug. 25. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Hughes is the son of proud parents Eleece Hughes Weatherspoon and Derrick Weatherspoon of Marlin.
