Beta Nu initiates four new members Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International - a professional honorary society for women educators - initiated four new members at their meeting May 3 at D. Brown Library in Rosebud, Texas. Ceremonial Chairman, Pam Dymke, presented Nina Averett of Milano, Shanna Denson of Rosebud, Lisa Fanz of Lott, and Frances Martinez of Rosebud to President Ann Dyer as candidates for active membership. Initiating officers consisted of Carolyn Grosclose, standing in for Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, incoming president; Dr. Ann Dyer, chapter president; Phyllis Macmillan, immediate past president; and Pam Dymke. Nina Avrett retired after twenty-nine years in the public school classroom. She taught fifth grade and junior high in Rockdale and fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in Milano. Avrett currently teaches ABE three days a week at the MARC Center in Rockdale which she really enjoys. During her career, she served on district textbook committees and directed elementary plays. Shanna Denson teaches third grade at Lott Elementary. She has been an elementary teacher for five years, and this is her first year at Lott. Shanna's husband is a coach at the high school. Shanna is a member of ATPE, Campus Improvement committee, and Curriculum committee for Burleson County. She is a second generation Delta Kappa Gamma member. Her mother, Linda Euwing, is a long-time society member and president of Zeta chapter in Waco. Lisa Fanz is a fifth grade teacher in Westphalia. She is a native of the Dallas area and graduated from Texas Women's University. During her professional career, she has taught special education, kindergarten, first grade, third grade, as well as fifth. She and her husband live in Lott and have many animals, including goats, longhorns, horses, dogs, and a cat. She loves to see students learn, and feels very fortunate to be a teacher. Frances Martinez is an ESL Instructional Aide at Rosebud Primary School. She was the school district's Outstanding Instructional Aide in 2007, and went on to be named the 2007 Paraprofessional of the Year for Region 12, and was named 2007 Paraprofessional of the Year for the State of Texas. She is a member of ATPE. She is also a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Rosebud and teaches CCD classes there. She also volunteers for numerous community activities. Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded in 1929 in Austin, Texas by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and eleven other outstanding women teachers to promote professionalism and personal growth among its members and excellence in education. It quickly spread throughout the United States, and now numbers almost 3,000 chapters worldwide, with chapters in sixteen countries. Beta Nu is the sixty-first chapter to be organized and was chartered in 1935 by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton herself at the Falls Hotel in Marlin, Texas. Submitted article
