75th Anniversary of D Brown Library to be observed April 28

Rosebud will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the D Brown Memorial Library Sunday April 28, beginning at 2 p.m. with a power point presentation telling about the Library’s Community Room followed by a reception.

The celebration is being sponsored by the Wednesday Study Club.  The library room and the Rosebud High School Memorial Hall will be open during the event.  The D Brown Memorial Library is located at 201 North Second Street, Rosebud, Texas.

Library benefactor

The late C.F. Brown, a Rosebud banker and landowner, deeded the library and its grounds to the City of Rosebud on June 28, 1949, in memory of his late wife D Brown.

During the presentation of the building Brown said, “I am glad to have the privilege of presenting this building to the people of Rosebud territory. It is an expression of love and appreciation for my late wife, D Brown, who always loved Rosebud and the Rosebud people. It is given as a memorial to her. I hope that it is to be a living memorial, one that will be of service and benefit to many people both today and tomorrow. I hope that those who use it will enjoy it.”

Brown designated the Wednesday Study Club to govern the use of the building.  It was to be operated as a “non-denominational library and civic center by the city of Rosebud and the Wednesday Study Club.”  His wife was a charter member of the club which was established Oct. 11, 1929.  The club was established to give its members the opportunity to study literature, art, music and science.

In his speech, Brown said that he wanted the library to be used by citizens, both old and young, “I had rather it would wear out than to rust out.  I am glad that I have caused this memorial to be built.  I hope that it expresses in deed, better than I am able to express in words, my love and affection for my wife and our appreciation of this good community.”

Brown concluded his presentation speech by handing Mrs. Howard Linn, president of the Wednesday Study Club, a deed to the library.  The dedication prayer on June 28, 1949, is still fitting today.

Dear Lord,

Build this library on the foundation of love,

Make it a threshold of tolerance

And its door key faith;

Let the light of understanding shine from its windows,

Let peace, gentleness, and truth-

Because it is dedicated in love-

Hover around its tables.

Roof it with success to love.  Amen

The first Wednesday Study Club librarian was Miss Johnney Stallworth, and at her death in 1948, her sister-in-law Mrs. Ira Stallworth was elected librarian.  Mrs. Ira Stallworth was the first librarian for the D Brown Library.  Kelly Hughes is the current librarian.

RHS Memorial Hall

In the early 1980s, beloved school teacher, Mary Lee Stubbs, and husband Bryon, bequeathed a trust to be used in the construction of and/or maintenance of an addition to the D Brown Library.

The addition known as the Rosebud High School Memorial Hall, houses and exhibits memorabilia of the old Rosebud High School, and items from the Stubbs’ estate.  Included in the exhibit are framed photos of the graduating classes of Rosebud High School along with Rosebud High School yearbooks.

Everyone is encouraged to come to the D Brown Library on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. to celebrate one of Rosebud’s treasured assets.
