City Council receives first forensic audit report

After an hour and half long executive session during their April 14 meeting, Marlin Mayor Carolyn Lofton informed attendees that Stewart and Hurst, the law firm handling the forensic audit for the City of Marlin, will be working with the finance department for the next year.

Details from the executive session discussion have not been released, but Councilwoman Neddie Lang-Moore moved to accept the firm’s report from April 6, 2020, as written. She also motioned to ensure that moving forward the City of Marlin would be implementing stronger internal controls and would continue the audit process until complete. The motion was seconded by Councilman Douglas Porter and passed unanimously.

Later in the meeting, Lofton explained to Judy Sisk, the city’s financial director, that representatives from the forensic auditing firm would be working directly with her department in order to put new processes in place.

“It’s no charge to the City of Marlin because he can see we need help,” Lofton told her.

The financial director also made the council aware that the yearly auditors were in the office during the week prior.

“They were here for three days,” Sisk explained. “The [yearly] audit should be completed by the end of April.”

A copy of the forensic audit was not available at the time of publication. More information will be provided.
