Delta Kappa Gamma Society International celebrates 92 Years!
May 11 marks the anniversary of the founding of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The Society has now been in existence for 92 years! Dr. Annie Webb Blanton of Austin, Texas, (member of the faculty of the University of Texas and a former and first female state superintendent of public instruction in Texas) was the founder of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. On May 11, 1929, she and several other women educators founded an honorary Society of outstanding women educators.
Beta Nu Chapter, centralized in Marlin, encompasses Falls, Milam, Robertson, Leon and Madison Counties. Beta Nu Chapter President Letitia Estep explains, “We are here to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and impact education here at home and worldwide.”
During state testing periods, Beta Nu Chapter will provide apples to educators in Marlin, Lott, and Rosebud schools.
Beta Nu Chapter provides pencils (huge quantities needed!) and funds for school supplies to Carolyn Groseclose, Beta Nu member and present educator in Zambia, Africa.
Beta Nu Chapter awards financial assistance to teachers by paying their first-time certification test fees.
There are scholarships available for graduate studies, continuing adult education, and educational travel.
Marlin City Chief of Police James Hommel’s presentation to Chapter members on April 12, 2021, was titled “Safety and Security Tips for Women.”
Beta Nu Chapter looks forward to implementing its new summer reading program for MISD students.
A Chapter member recently taught two classes at the MISD Parent Academy titled “Resume Writing and Job Interview Tips.”
May’s meeting program will feature a Founders’ Day celebration plus a health professional’s presentation on “Women’s Health Issues Today.”
This is an exciting time for members. The 92nd Texas State Organization (TSO) Texas State Convention will be held in Denton, June 17-19, 2021. This will be followed by the 2021 edition of the DKG INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE in SAN ANTONIO, TX, July 22-24, 2021, at the San Antonio Marriott River Center Hotel, situated on the vibrant River Walk in downtown San Antonio. (2020 DKG International Convention was in Philadelphia, PA.)
