Anniversary of a tragic death, honored

The Falls County Sheriff’s Office has participated in the National Run for the Badge Virtual 5K on Saturday, Oct. 10, just one day before the one-year anniversary of the event that took the life of Falls County’s own Deputy Matt Jones.

On Oct. 11, 2019, Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Jones was fatally injured while assisting a motorist on Hwy 6 near Riesel when an oncoming vehicle hydroplaned and struck the officer, as well as Reisel Police Chief Danny Krumnow who suffered major injuries.

Each year, Run for the Badge is held in Washington D.C. to fundraise for the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum, where Jones is recognized on a wall. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event was held virtually so that runners could participate and fundraise from wherever they are. The goal for the national project is to fundraise $100,000, with donations coming from those supporting their runners. 

Sheriff’s Department personnel, accompanied by family and friends, met early Saturday morning to run the track at Marlin High School.

"We all wanted to do something in honor of his tribute," Scaman said.

Jones’ family met that morning on his parent’s farm in Mart to participate in their own “walk” for the badge. Along their route, the family created their own memorials of the fallen officer, sharing their favorite photos, memories, flowers, and more. 

A silent auction was held as part of the gathering, bringing in more than $1,700 for the cause. Donations can still be made through the Run for the badge website by search for team name “Jonsey #3112."
