Coming soon: Banners of Our Military Servicemen

Special to the Marlin Democrat

Y’all remember her: Jean McLeod Craig, the Alaskan native devoted to her Marlin community, smiling-est hostess, air pilot, world traveler, entrepreneur, avid reader, gourmet cook, talented seamstress, accomplished artist, race car driver, and United States Air Force veteran. “This was her last project,” explained husband and American Legionnaire Rogers Craig, “to have banners of servicemen and women from Falls County displayed large and proudly in downtown Marlin.”

Like many of our veterans, Jean found a home amongst her fellow servicemen in the American Legion, namely the Falls County American Legion Post 31 in Marlin. Jean was there when the American Legion celebrated its 99th year anniversary, under Commander Michael J. Estep, a 22-1/2 year U.S. Navy CPO Veteran. And she was there when it was time to grill hamburgers at the Motorcycle Show on the Square for sales with which to help other veterans. But why wouldn’t she be there? That’s what veterans do – they work programs and activities to strengthen the nation one community at a time.

Did you know? The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.

Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for support of all military personnel. In downtown Marlin, we are proud to display double-sided banners of images of active military personnel from Falls County. These are the fine young men and women for whom we have banners: U.S. Air Force: Jacob Fulton; U.S. Army: Leslie Burrell, Briscoe Elliott, Bree’Asia McCraw, Eduardo Miranda, Joshua Sabalu, Danny Williams, Jr.; U.S. Marines: Stephen McIntosh II; U.S. Navy: Roberto Griffin, Michael Ormsby. But, if anyone knows of any other active military personnel from Falls County, contact American Legionnaire Jay Elliott at (913) 702-4563.
