New Leadership for Zion Missionary Baptist Church

MARLIN, TX — In a heartfelt and symbolic moment that marked both an ending and a beginning, Rev. Stephen Wayne Johnson, Sr., longtime pastor of Upper Zion Missionary Baptist Church, officially passed the baton of leadership to Minister Carwanda Uvette Cross, who will now serve as Interim Pastor, during a special service held Sunday, December 28, 2025.

The sanctuary was filled with church members, family, friends, and well-wishers who gathered to witness the transition—one rooted in faith, continuity, and strong spiritual stewardship.

Rev. Johnson, who served faithfully as Senior Pastor, stood facing Minister Cross as the two held a red baton adorned with black, gray, and white streamers— representing the journey of leadership, the weight of responsibility, and the unity of the church family moving forward together.

A Symbol of Faithful Leadership

During the ceremony, Rev. Johnson shared a heartfelt presentation message that echoed deeply throughout the worship hall:

“Minister Cross, today I stand before you with a grateful heart and a steady hand. This baton I now pass to you is red, reminding us of the blood of Jesus that covers us and strengthens us for every assignment. The streamers of black, gray, and white represent the journey — the good days, the hard days, and the days when we simply walk by faith and not by sight.

“As I place this baton in your hands, I am not passing my work, my name, or my position — I am passing the charge to preach the Gospel, to stand with God’s people, and to walk worthy of the calling with which you have been called. May you run your race with patience, lead with humility, serve with compassion, and trust God in all things.

“I give you this baton as a symbol of continuity, commitment, and calling — not to replace my footsteps, but to follow the path God is now setting before you. May the Lord bless you, strengthen you, and make your ministry fruitful.

“Run well, my sister. The race is yours now. Amen.”

Interim Pastor Cross received the baton with grace and emotion, expressing humility and readiness to serve during this period of transition. The congregation rose in applause, signaling unity and full support.

Guided Forward With Strength and Stability

Minister Cross will lead the church as Interim Pastor while the congregation discerns its future pastoral direction. Members expressed confidence that her spiritual leadership will honor the church’s heritage while ensuring steadiness and growth.

A Legacy Continued With Thanksgiving

Rev. Johnson’s retirement marks the conclusion of his pastoral tenure at Upper Zion, but not his influence. He shared that he would continue offering mentorship and support as the ministry evolves under new guidance.
