Texas Veterans’ Ranch and Family Resort announces new recovery house helping veterans move forward

The Texas Veterans’ Ranch and Family Resort announced March 16 the acquisition of property at 126 County Rd 2869 in Marlin to be the future home of a Recovery House for veterans rebounding from substance use disorder. TVRAFR hopes to open the property to residents in 2021, pending acquisition of funds for needed renovations and startup costs.

“Unfortunately, there is an all-too-familiar pattern for our veterans who have suffered trauma and pain,” says Alondo Waters, TVRAFR’s Executive Director. “Trauma leads to self-medication, self-medication leads to addiction, and addiction destroys lives. Substance abuse treatment centers can help them regain sobriety, but many need longer term ongoing support as they recover. We want to provide our veterans with a safe place to rebuild their lives.”

Positive Veteran Impact

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says that 10 percent of all veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and 20 percent of veterans who suffer from PTSD, struggle with substance abuse. Since 2014, TVRAFR has provided support for veterans and families in recovery through therapeutic retreats. Its new Recovery House will expand this work by providing supportive housing for veterans who need friendship, accountability, safe shelter, and employment assistance to get back on their feet.

TVRAFR former program participant and current board member Earl Allen says, “After my military service, my life path took me to a bad place when I got involved in alcohol and drugs. TVRAFR helped me get back on my feet with an apartment, a car, and a job. Now I’m clean and sober, and I’m excited for the chance to help TVRAFR give back to other veterans in need.”

Recovery House Project Plan

TVRAFR is seeking $150,180 in funding to repair and remodel the property as Phase I of the Recovery House project, to make the existing home suitable for occupation by 3 to 5 clients and one resident case manager, and to cover firstyear operating costs. Additionally, TVRAFR is seeking $50,000 in Phase II funding to purchase adjoining property for future program expansion.
