Live Oak, Litter Free!
More than a dozen people showed up to lend a hand in cleaning up Live Oak Street on Saturday, March 14, collecting 15 large bags of trash and debris in just 4 hours. The event, organized by Shara Hance, stretched from the starting point of McDonald’s down Live Oak to the old DQ building, nearly one mile in distance.
“Live Oak wasn’t as bad as Monroe, but we cleaned the parts we worked very thoroughly,” Hance said after the conclusion of the event. “Everyone worked hard and we had more people show up than last time. The city had gone through and cleaned the debris in the road the week before this cleanup, so that cut down on the trash.” Still, volunteers young and old, clad in safety vests and toting tools, found all sorts of items in ditches and along the street that didn’t belong- trash, empty bottles, articles of clothing, even a worn out tire. Kyle Simmons loaded bags of trash as they were filled and took them to the city dump.
“I want to find a place even worse than Monroe,” Shara said, encouraged by a challenge. “I’d like it to be 30 bags of trash for half a mile of road. Wherever the worst place is, that’s where we should work!”
The next local cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. - location to be determined. If you know a street in Marlin that is in desperate need of attention and care, feel free to send details and pictures to amontoya@marlindemocrat. com ! Your area of concern could be chosen as the next cleanup site.
