MISD graduates honored at successful ceremony

The Class of 2020 at Marlin ISD was honored in a number of ways over the weekend of May 29.

It began with Marlin ISD’s graduation ceremony on the Friday evening. Forty-two students walked across the stage at the Marlin football field and moved their tassels from left to right that evening.

The ceremony was filled with heartfelt addresses, from Daryl Henson, the school district’s new superintendent to Charles Hitchens, who is a MHS graduate and coach, along with a number of other officials.

Brianna Ocampo, Class of 2020 salutatorian, gave an incredibly moving speech, followed by Brooke Chavez, valedictorian.

Student achievements for the top ten percent, National Honor Society, athletics, and special programs were all highlighted. It was announced that the Class of 2020 was offered a total of $3,392,798 in combined scholarships and grants.

After the certification of diplomas, a presentation highlighting each student’s achievements played to the Senior Song - The Climb by Miley Cyrus. Baby pictures and childhood photos flashed across the screen as well.

The class officers ended the ceremony with the turning of the tassels, just after the class president, Deonta Mims, gave the benediction.

There was a senior parade the next day, where graduates decorated their cars, stood in truck beds, and hung out the sunroof while riding around town. The route was lined with viewers, most shouting their congratulations.

A baccalaureate ceremony was held Sunday night at the First Baptist Church of Marlin, organized by a number of parents and community members.

Though their high school careers may be over, it is obvious that the Class of 2020 is loved by their fellow Marlinites. More photos from graduation celebrations can be found at marlindemocrat.com.
