Bronze Brigade: Marlin girls’ 400-meter relay team third at state

The Marlin girls did not return home empty-handed from the UIL Class 2A State Track & Field Championships at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin on Saturday. The 4x100-meter relay quartet earned bronze medals with a third-place finish. Marlin’s time of 49.24 seconds was just three one-hundredths of a second behind silver medalist Sunray. San Augustine won the race in 48.68. Marlin’s team consisted of sophomores running the first three legs and a junior running the anchor leg. Kendra Hayes ran the opening 100 meters. She handed off to Aniya Williams for the second leg. Taliyah Davis ran the third leg and Danielle Noble ran the anchor leg. The third-place finish was a jump up for the squad, which entered the race with the seventh-best qualifying time. But they improved by nearly a full second to earn a medal at the state race. The Lady Bulldogs finished fifth in the 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1 minute, 45.54 seconds. That was just three one-hundredths of a second behind fourth-place finisher Shiner. Hayes again ran the opening leg. She handed off to Diamond McCraw for the second leg. Williams ran the third leg and Davis ran the anchor leg. Sunray won the gold medal with a time of 1:43.78. Despite the fifth-place finish, Marlin’s time was a second and a half faster than their qualifying time.
