Cedar Springs Methodist Church invites you to see tree

English Christmas carol first appeared 1739, based on Luke 2:14

Cedar Springs Methodist Church, 1365 FM 2027, Rosebud, TX 76570, invites you to step back in time as we go back in time, perhaps we will focus on WWII when times were hard – but a festive mood was still made possible by recycling old newspaper to make chains for the family Christmas tree!

They will take this a step further and say that we are not only creating a nostalgic Christmas tree, but one that is ECO-FRIENDLY.  Eco-friendly – means Earth friendly. Recycle- converting usable materials for use again.

This tree is decorated with angels, Christmas balls, and chains using old copies of The Upper Room – Where the World Meets to Pray, a daily devotional guide we make available at our church for all to take and use daily.  We have fashioned ball ornaments with shredded pages from the devotional guide, angels from folded pages of the devotional guide, and paper chains (Remember making those as a child?) from the beautiful covers of the devotional guide – truly works of art (beautifully drawn and in magnificent colors to instill depth, and an emotional connection). Please, take a moment to travel with us back to a time when life was perhaps hard, but simpler and more meaningful…  You decide.

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most cherished holiday traditions around the WORLD.

Fun Facts: Speaking of recycling… Before Christmas lights were invented, bits of foil (first produced commercially in the U.S. in 1913) were added to the tree to reflect the light in the room and make the tree glisten!

The round shape of ball ornaments originates from the shapes of original decorating material – fruits and nuts!

Soon after Christmas trees became popular (way back in the day), parents would decorate trees with streamers telling their children that the streamers were pieces of angel hair that had been caught in the branches.  Also, the angel symbolizes the angel that appeared at Bethlehem announcing the birth of Jesus, the angel Gabriel who told Mary she would give birth to Jesus, and the angels watching over us and protecting us.

Cedar Springs Methodist Church wishes you and yours a very happy holiday season- 2023!
