A change is on the horizon

The Falls County Booker T. Washington Alumni & Ex-Student Association under the direction of the newly elected National President, Kathryn Lynn, hosted its first retreat the weekend of Sept. 23-24, 2022 in Waco.

The goals of the retreat included designing fundraising opportunities, establishing clear scholarship requirements for Marlin High School graduating seniors, prioritizing building renovations and repairs, and outlining membership recruitment and retention strategies necessary to sustain the association.

Members were reminded of the original intent of the founding pioneers to ensure active community involvement with the citizens of Marlin, providing financial scholarships and mentoring programs for Marlin’s youth. The 43 participants divided into committees and created detailed directions allowing for a more active and visible presence with the community of Marlin.  Financial update and proposed budgets were discussed as well as adding new security systems to the alumni building. The Association is building the bridges that will control the narrative of our future through scholarships and mentoring programs to ensure a legacy of excellence in education and community service.

We were pleased that the Honorable Cedric Davis took time from him busy schedule to provide a meet and greet and answered questions at the retreat.

The Booker T. Washington Alumni & Ex- Student Association will host a “DoubleGood Popcorn” fundraising drive and would like the participation of the citizens of Falls County.

For those interested in renting the building, reservations and leasing agreements can be made by contacting Dr. Linda Canady at (912) 604-8196. The building manager, Maggie Majors, will be offering and conducting scheduled facility tours.  She can be reached at (254) 495-2085.
