Chilton ISD addresses Friday lockdown

From Chilton Superintendent Brandon Hubbard:

Today’s events are a reminder of the necessary precautions that must be taken to ensure the safety of our Chilton ISD students and staff members. At approximately 8:40 a.m., the Falls County Sheriff’s Department received a call of an active shooter in a Chilton ISD bathroom. When notified of the report and in an abundance of caution, the Chilton ISD immediately initiated lockdown protocols. These protocols were held until law enforcement officers arrived to clear every classroom in the school district to ensure the safety of all staff and students.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division has identified the source of the call and is working to resolve that situation. Despite the heavy presence of law enforcement on campus, it has been determined and confirmed that there was never an immediate threat to the safety of students and staff members in the Chilton ISD. We commend the law enforcement agencies involved for their immediate response and our district is committed to cooperating fully with the ongoing investigations being conducted by these agencies. In addition, we commend those members of our district guardian team who are armed and trained to intervene in the event of an active shooter situation. The Chilton ISD is committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that students and staff members are safe.

I encourage you to use this opportunity to speak with your student about immediately reporting any threats or suspicious behavior to school staff so we can address those concerns immediately. We will always take the necessary precautions to protect our students. Chilton ISD has a zero-tolerance policy for violence on school property and will prosecute violators to the full extent of the law. I also remind all parents and students about using STOPit to anonymously report to school officials anything of concern. You may access STOPit from the CISD website.

As we move forward from this incident, we are working to have additional personnel and resources available to help our students and staff debrief. In addition, if you did not receive notification regarding this situation, please notify the school immediately to ensure that your contact information is correct within the student information system. Thank you to our staff, our on-campus guardian team, the Falls County Sheriff’s Department, Falls County Constables, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the members of the Chilton Volunteer Fire Department for your response and service during this incident. Thank you, parents, for entrusting us with the education and care of your student. Together, our schools are safer and stronger.
