City of Marlin Parks Commissioners installed

Members of the newly established Marlin City Parks Commission were installed by Mayor Susan Byrd earlier this summer.

Jay Butler is the Director of the City Parks Commission. Debra McDavid and Morris Watson are Park Advisors. The Commissioners have worked diligently identifying the numerous City of Marlin parks and are excited as upgrades, maintenance and upkeep and creating pathways for family and community events are in the making.

The City of Marlin has seven established parks including Airport Park, Apple Sports Park Complex, Arlington Garden Gazebo Park, Dingrando Park, Falconer Park, MLK Park, and Lucille Williams Pavilion.

The Commissioners are thrilled of the possibility of another park that will be added to the list pending paperwork transfer. Applications and guidelines for park facility use have been updated. Facility use signs have been ordered and food trucks and vendor guidelines and fees have been updated.

The Commission is reaching out to the public asking for support of the city public works division and efforts of the Commissioners, for with every step made for improvement, there is a setback. Trashing the parks, major vandalism, use of parks as a dumping ground, and intent to demolished parks are a few of the numerous concerns.

One commissioner stated, “A good example of vandalism is splicing the turf on the Apple Sports Park soccer field and why?”

Unless otherwise noted, the Park Commission meetings are the second Thursday monthly at 6 p.m. at the City of Marlin City Council Chamber.
