City receives grant for Municipal Airport improvements

The City of Marlin has been awarded additional $50,000 match grant by TXDOT through the Routine Maintenace Airport Program (RAMP).

Marlin Municipal Airport (T15) underwent several new upgrades in 2020, including additional parking, cleared overgrowth, removal of invasive aquatic vegetation, lighting enhancements, runway maintenance, and structural upgrades. Most notably was the certification of New City Lake as the third inland seaplane landing base for pilots in Texas.

The TXDOT RAMP award match allows further improvements to the facility for future development and expansion. Funding will be applied to airport access road maintenance, electrical upgrades, semi-primitive campsites, and construction of a flight planning and lounge space for pilots.

The initial improvements in 2020 helped hold the attention of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 34 members, which partnered with Marlin and Young Eagles to host a fly-in of over four-dozen aircraft in November 2020. Further attention from the initial enhancements came from an article published in Sport Aviation Magazine (Vol 70, No.2; Feb. 2021; Sims, Chris). Marlin is planning to host EAA again in November 2021, along with invites to other aeronautical clubs and organizations.
