Special to The Democrat

Delta Kappa Gamma Society Iaxnternational was founded May 11, 1929, in Austin, Texas. It is a professional honorary society of women educators. The Society promotes professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education.

Beta Nu Chapter was organized November 2, 1935, in Marlin, Texas, by Founder and Alpha State Executive Secretary, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton. The chapter was formed from Beta Beta Chapter and was ceded Falls, Milam, Robertson, Leon and Madison Counties as membership territory. Miss Agnes Peyton was Beta Nu’s first President. Beta Nu’s first chapter meeting was held February 8, 1936, in the Falls Hotel.

Beta Nu Chapter’s 88th Birthday Celebration was held on November 4, 2023, at Eastside Church of Christ, Marlin. Members are President Letitia Estep, Vice President Shirley Wilson, Treasurer Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, Secretary Sheila Lawson, Parliamentarian Phyllis Macmillan, Peggy Clark, Cynthia Derry, Carolyn Groseclose, Roseanne Groseclose, Monalisa Matthews, and Rhonda Milton.

In a candle-lighting ceremony led by VP Shirley Wilson, the light from the candle reminds educators of the responsibilities to lighten the darkness of ignorance and spread knowledge and understanding.

“Happy 88th Birthday, Beta Nu” topped the lemon cake. Complements were coffee, pumpkin madeleines, and orange juice. “Happy Birthday” and “Fall Things in November” were sung.

The colors of Delta Kappa Gamma are crimson and gold – red for courage and gold for loyalty to members and to the ideals of the Society. The DKG rose is a natural creation that reflects beauty of mind and spirit.

“Pride in the Big Picture” was reading the history of Beta Nu Chapter and recalling the responsibilities and benefits of membership.
