Falls County Blackland Row Crop Tour set for June 16

The Falls County Blackland Row Crop Tour will take place Monday, June 16, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The annual event offers local producers a chance to explore test plots, hear from experts and earn continuing education units.

The tour’s first stop will be Herzog’s Corn Plot on CR 489 near Lott. Attendees will then visit Hoelscher’s Sorghum Test Plot before heading to the Westphalia Cafeteria, located at 124 CR 3000 in Lott, for lunch and presentations.

Capital Farm Credit will provide breakfast. Attendees can earn three CEUs, including hours toward the continuing education requirements for licensed private applicators and Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs).

Licensed private applicators must obtain 15 hours of CEUs every five years to renew or recertify their license. These hours must include 2 hours of Laws and Regulations, 2 hours of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and any mix of these and General hours to equal the required 15 hours of CEUs.

Speakers include Dr. Jason Johnson, Extension Economist, discussing market updates and outlooks, and David Kerns, Associate Department Head and IPM Coordinator, who will address corn leaf hopper issues and management. A third presentation on feral hog management is also planned.

Participants are asked to RSVP by June 11 by calling the Falls County Extension Office at 254-883-1410. Anyone needing special assistance to attend should contact Pasquale Swaner or Melissa Fulton at least three days in advance.

The event is coordinated by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in cooperation with the USDA and local county governments.
