Falls County Retired Teachers hold meeting

Informative & Protective Services (IPS) was the theme for the Falls County Retired Teachers Chapter December meeting.

Members dined as the program was followed.

IPS chair, Barbara Stewart, invited as guest speaker Rev. F. A Green Sr. who spoke on “Let’s have the talk of a lifetime.” He reminded the members to cherish what they worked for by having documents in order and not leave loved ones unprepared.

Examples of readiness, including but not limited to, are banking, funeral service plans, insurance, property, credit cards, etc. Rev. Green explained the difference in power of attorney and medical power of attorney.

Green stated, “When one dies, the power of attorney dies as well, and often probate court settles estates as needed.” He pointed out in planning for funeral expenses, Teacher Retirement System (TRS) death benefits goes to the beneficiary and cannot be used to pay for funerals. The local chapter president, Elizabeth Richardson, thanked Rev. Green for useful information encouraging all to have “that talk.”

The business meeting resumed with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting by Secretary Bobbie Milton. In her absence, a finance report was made available by Hermetta Paul, Treasurer. Community Volunteer Hours chair, Annie McGruder, reminded the group the volunteer hours should be submitted at the January meeting. Helen McCullough Smith, Service Projects chair, led the discussion on the Dec. 13 delivery of the 204 book donations for Falls County first graders. She noted the MISD Appreciation personalized pens will be delivered prior to the Winter break. Deanne Lofton Clark and LaTonja Taplin will spearhead the holiday community service project. As Santa’s helpers, members will adopt a local family by providing new tricycles, toys, and clothes.

In other matters, an upcoming community service project will include a public meeting featuring PHI Air Medical. A representative will speak on emergency air transport and related air patient helicopter services including the financial aspects.  TRTA District 12 President JoAnne Sugg attended the meeting and thanked the chapter for its organizational skills, committees, and commitment.
