Garretts’ outreach in community is special

Bishop Lonnie and Ouida (Gail) Johnson Garrett were both born and educated in Marlin and attended Booker T. Washington Schools. As a result of integration, both graduated from Marlin High School. In 1967, Lonnie was the first black student to graduate from Marlin High.

The Garretts had numerous things in common but being preachers’ kids surpassed everything else. Because of their love for singing, playing the piano and the support of the late Mrs. Lucille Hampton, the two formed a community choir producing its first album, “There’s Only One Bridge.” This production was a great success in Marlin and the surrounding areas.

Lonnie and Ouida’s relationship brought a little less than 500 to witness their union in marriage July 28, 1984. Their immediate family consists of three children, who are also singers and musicians and nine grandchildren.

The Garretts produced several recordings, community and church related services, and independent entrepreneurships with various business opportunities. Pastor Lonnie was appointed bishop in 1994 and after the death of Bishop Floyd Williams, was appointed National Bishop of the All-Nation Pentecostal Apostolic Churches in 2016. Ouida Gail was called to preach in 1999, and later appointed Co-Pastor with Bishop Garrett at Bible Way in Marlin where she continues to work faithfully in music and church administration. They recently celebrated 50 years of leadership July 2021 at Bible Way Church Family Worship Center.

During the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Garretts provided outreach for their church congregation by implementing outdoor services, telephone conferences and Zoom. They believe even in this pandemic that Bible Way is exceptionally blessed. Visitors are welcome to all services at the Bible Way Church Family Worship Center, 804 Jackson Street, Marlin.
