Hubert, Jones recognized for excellence in teaching

Lott, Texas, population 751. Marlin, Texas, population 5,607 (United Stated Census Bureau, 2019).  Lott and Marlin are two vibrant rural communities that sit less than 15 miles apart and in the same county, Falls County. Surprisingly, these two  “country towns” — as they are commonly referred to as your “big city” friends — have produced two extremely proud and talented country girls: Dr. Tarcia Hubert, native of Lott  and Dr. Brandolyn Jones, native of Marlin.

Drs.Tarica Hubert and Brandolyn Jones are both college professors at Lone Star College.  Lone Star College (LSC) is a system of seven college campuses and 11 centers located across the Houston-Metroplex. Serving more than 85,000 students, Lone Star College offers a variety of associate degrees, three bachelors degrees, and more than 30 fully-online programs to choose from.

Neither Dr. Jones nor Dr. Hubert could have imagined their small town roots intertwining in the hustle and bustle of Houston, but fate determined otherwise. On Feb. 18, in the midst of Black History Month celebrations across the country, and Jones were both recognized for their excellence in teaching and excellence in service during the annual Lone Star College Employee Award Ceremony.  Some might consider this all chance, but “Country Girl Magic”  has a much nicer ring to it.

Dr. Tarcia Hubert

Hubert, native of Lott, is a Professor of Mathematics at Lone Star College - Houston North, and has worked in higher education for the last 15 years. Hubert received a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in mathematics education from Texas A&M University.  She also received a bachelor and Master of Science in Mathematics from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Prior to joining the faculty at Lone Star College, Hubert worked at University of Houston, Texas A&M University, and Austin Community College.  Hubert was recently awarded with the Faculty Excellence Award for her dedication to her students, college, and teaching of mathematics.

Hubert is deeply interested in finding ways to effectively support underrepresented students of color in their learning and understanding of mathematics. She is also interested in increasing minority students’ participation in STEM fields. She provides opportunities for students to receive exposure and access to STEM through Making Awesome Things Happen (M.A.T.H.) nonprofit organization which she founded.  M.A.T.H. provides high quality tutoring, summer programs, school interventions, and professional development that focus on developing mathematical proficiency among traditionally underrepresented students.  Through M.A.T.H., Hubert has planned and/or directed 25 funded projects for underrepresented students totaling approximately $1.6 million in funding.

Hubert is also a wife and mother and she enjoys spending time and traveling with her family. Trips back to Lott and Rosebud, are among the favorite past times of her family. Hubert is also a serial entrepreneur, and owns Greenwood Studios and Greenwood Boutique, both in Houston.

Dr. Brandolyn Jones

Dr. Brandolyn Jones is a proud native of Marlin and 1996 graduate of Marlin High School. In 2016, Dr. Jones joined the faculty of Lone Star College-Kingwood where she now teaches online. Prior to joining LSC- Kingwood, she served the students, faculty and staff of Marlin Elementary School and taught master level courses in the Department of Educational Leadership at Sam Houston State University. Dr. Jones earned her bachelor’s degree and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University and her Master of Education in Administration from Tarleton State University.  As a Professor of Education, Dr. Jones is committed to teaching and engaging her students in effective pedagogical practices as they pursue their Associates of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree at Lone Star College.

As a researcher, Dr. Jones’ scholarship centers on topics of diversity, equity, and social justice in education. Dr. Jones has presented her research at state and national conferences and has published her research in several peer-reviewed journals including, The Journal of School Leadership, Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, The Teacher Educator and The Journal of Negro Education.  In 2017 and 2020, Dr. Jones was the recipient of the Lone Star College Writing Award. She was honored with the Faculty Excellence Award in 2020 and most recently, Dr. Jones was one of only two recipients to receive the 2022 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award at Lone Star College.

When she is not teaching or writing, Dr. Jones enjoys Wordle, hanging out with her families in Marlin and Kosse and, most of all, traveling and exploring historical museums with her husband, Cliff, and sons, Addai and Praiyer.
