A joyful day for three MISD students

Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, was another especially joyful day for three Marlin students! Why? On this day, Roselin Vaccecillos (Middle School), Sierra Walker (Middle School), and Jeremiah Shelley (High School) were presented each with a stunningly well-built and attractive bicycle.

Making the presentations was Letitia Estep, President DKG Society International Beta Nu Chapter and Treasurer/2nd Vice President of the Marlin Community Garden Club. Also present were Mayor Susan Byrd as President of the Marlin Community Garden Club (at 100-years-young is the oldest, registered and continuous garden club in the State of Texas), and Shirley Wilson as Vice President of DKG Society International Beta Nu Chapter (approaching its 88th anniversary).

Roselin Vaccecillo, daughter of Maria Gonzalez and Santos Vallecillos and accompanied also by her grandmother Irma Gonzalez, is proud owner of a girl’s white Giant LIV Enchant bicycle with fast-rolling wheels and trail-ready tires. Roselin’s Enchant bicycle is a fun, stable bike to help her build confidence and skills. An owner’s handbook, helmet and chain/lock mechanism completed her gift.

Sierra Walker, daughter of Scarletta Walker and  David Dorsey, is the proud owner of an aqua Giant LIV 24” alloy bicycle, designed to be light, agile, and easy to maneuver off-road. Easy-to-use twist shifters provide a secure confidence as she tackles new terrain. An owner’s handbook, helmet and chain/lock mechanism completed her gift.

Jeremiah Shelley, accompanied by Annie Bledsoe, is the owner of a men’s red Giant bicycle. The Giant XtC 27.5 offers this high-school student a solid race performance. From trails to canal paths and everything in between, this versatile bike can add some spice to Jeremiah’s biking experience. For him, also, an owner’s handbook, helmet and chain/lock mechanism completed his gift.

Cycling is brilliant for children - it helps them get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

It’s been proved by scientific studies: while cycling, happy chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which cause euphoria and pain relief, are being released into the bloodstream. Serotonin is the mood neurotransmitter responsible for positive feelings and self-confidence. Dopamine helps individuals to feel fresh and motivated.

The best reason for cycling is much simpler: Children love cycling - it’s fast and fun, and gives them freedom and independence to get around.

From Terri Glover of Marlin’s Community Garden Club and the Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, “It is a pleasure to present these three students with bicycles. We wish them safety and many, many hours of fun on their new bicycles.” Of course, Letitia Estep added, “Follow the rules for riding on the road and wear your helmets!”

The three students, their parents and extended families, Terri Glover and members of the Community Garden club, and members of DKG Society International Beta Nu Chapter extend their thanks and appreciation to Ms. Gardere, Ms. Pamela Thomas, and Superintendent Dr. Darryl Henson for their part in making this day an unforgettable day, amongst treasured days at their Marlin school, for Roselin, Sierra, and Jeremiah.
