Legion Field to close to the public

The Marlin ISD School Board of Managers met May 1 at the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson, presiding. Board Managers present were Misty Ehlers, Byrleen Terry, and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent of Schools.

As a public comment, on behalf of the Marlin ISD family, Dr. Henson acknowledged condolences to the family of Donte Seattle “Tae Tae” Trotter.

After returning from closed session in deliberation of personnel matters, Superintendent’s Reports followed. 

Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources and Special Projects, provided Bond 2022 updates. As part of the scope of work for Legion Field, Bustamante announced as of May 2, 2023, Legion Field will be closed to the public for construction. Meetings are planned for various aspects of the proposals. Dr. Henson, Bustamante, and Dr. Parker Knight traveled to other district project sites to consider as options. The Bond Advisory Committee will meet on May 15 at 6:30 pm. 

Marquita McCullum, Director Elementary Education, presented the District of Innovation Process. To alleviate submitting waivers throughout the year, exemptions are being explored including first day of Instruction/Calendar, Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade class sizes, campus behavior coordinator, student health advisory council, teacher certification, probationary contracts, ejection of individuals from facilities, teacher appraisal system, and school district depositories contract.

Dr. Henson continued the Superintendent’s Report by discussing the Districtwide Intruder Detection April 13 Audit Report findings. At the Marlin Middle School Campus, Phase 1, no corrective action was required. No one was able to gain unsecured/unauthorized access to campus. Phase 2, Exterior Door Audit, only one corrective action was required. The campus had one exterior door that was not closed and properly locked. Phase 3, Classroom Door Audit, no corrective action required. Phase 4, Weekly Exterior Door Sweeps Audit, no corrective action required. Dr. Henson summarized the Audit Report with action steps.

Jess Bustamante discussed the 2023-2024 Salary Schedule changes with competitive stipends available. Pay Grade 12 position was changed from Director of Academics to Director of Federal & State Programs. Byrleen Terry, Board of Manager, summarized the report on Continuing Education Credit for Board members. All Board members have successfully completed continuing education requirements. 

Byrleen Terry moved to approve the consent agenda items, seconded by Misty Ehlers, motion carried. Prior to the meeting adjourned, Superintendent Henson announced the 2023-2024 yearbooks will be available May 29. The 2nd Annual Community Fair is May 6 at the Marlin Middle School, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The On-Site Job Fair will be at the MMS Learning Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. With no further business, the meeting adjourned.
