Local historical church moves forward with rebuilding plans
ANCHORED IN THE COMMUNITY
The Marlin church, which celebrated its 105th year anniversary in October 2018, stood as an anchor for many Marlin families who once called it home. It moved to its present location from a house gathering on George Street. According to church historian Bobbie Weakly, in 1918 church member Beatrice Smith sold the church the land at its present site for $85.
Members then erected a tent-like arbor to hold worship. It wasn’t until 1943 that a permanent wooden structure was built due to the scarceness of materials during the World War II.
“Although the members were happy to have a better building, it wasn’t sufficient to continue holding services in”, said Weakly.
