Marlin’s new mayor historical choice

History was made in Marlin on May 13 when Mayor Carolyn Lofton was sworn in. Lofton is the city’s first female mayor and the first African-American representative to hold office in the city. It was made official during the swearing-in ceremony at the regularly scheduled council meeting where well over 100 supporters packed Marlin City Hall to celebrate the milestone. “I ran for Mayor on a slogan of - one community, one family, one goal,” Lofton said. “I believed in the spirit of my fellow Marlinites to come together to revitalize our community. I prayed about it and God confirmed for me that I was the person He chose to make Marlin a better place and that I should run for this position. He gave me the vision of uniting the citizens around a common goal and encouraging them to join with me in the effort to restore and improve Marlin.” Lofton said she is forever grateful for the opportunity given by the citizens to work with them to move Marlin forward and she believes that in doing the right thing simply because it’s the right thing to do. She said her first task is to determine where the city is in terms of finances, infrastructure, economics, etc.
