Marlin community gathers to celebrate MLK Day

“It Starts with Me: Shifting Priorities to Create the Beloved Community” was the theme for the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although the continuing pandemic may have limited events to celebrate the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., over 30 local community members gathered at the M.L. King Park on Monday, Jan. 17, to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday. The holiday is observed each year on the third Monday in January.

Dr. King, who would have turned 93 on January 15, was a pastor and civil rights leader, who dedicated his non-violent leadership to achieving racial equality. Dr. King was the driving force behind landmark events like the Montgomery bus boycott and the March on Washington.

Cedric Davis Jr. opened the program with the purpose of celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King.

12-year-old Tristan Bailey recited the “I Have a Dream” speech. Many stated that they attended the program to support the youth involved and promote Dr. King’s dream.

The community was reminded that “Democracy is on the ballot” and it’s time for a change including a new approach for unity.”  James Lang stated, “We need to support the youth and remember they are watching us as adults.”

Local community leaders were introduced. Observations and remarks were welcomed including q/a session on city works. A balloon release followed the singing of the Negro National Anthem “Lift Ev’ry Voice.”
