Marlin ISD Board discusses several topics

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met April 4 at the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson presiding.  

Board Managers present were Misty Ehlers, Byrleen Terry, and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent of Schools. There were no agenda items public comments posted.

After returning from closed session, Pursuant to Texas Government Code Section 551.074, deliberation of personnel matters, Superintendent Reports followed. 

Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources & Special Education, presented Vision 2025: Key Strategic measures focusing on the promotion of Extra- and Co-Curricular activities including a May 15 Club Fair Day to increase interest and participation in clubs and events. Procedures and guidelines regarding expenditures and promotion of the fair are upcoming targets. Staff survey to identify interest has been completed and the Extra- Co- Curricular activities handbook are aimed. Marketing tools were discussed with completion dates.

Dr. Sharon Deloach, Interim Principal, Marlin High School, shared ninth and tenth grade students’ growth in Algebra I and English I & II. Action plans include professional learning communities, content focused data digs, intervention groups targeting retesters and increased monitoring from weekly assessments. In addition, Dr. Deloach shared English Learner Support Plan and Student Tracking. Over 150 students are English learners and 67 students attended additional ESL programs. The average gain by percentage for students that attended at least four of the seven Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) program supports was 11 percent. Marlin Elementary currently has four certified ESL teachers. 

The Summer 2022 District Professional Development Plan was presented by Dr. Stacy Parker, Executive Director of Academics and Student Services. Putting students first ensures a learning environment that is conductive to the best academic performance for all. The Professional Development Plan will provide teachers quality professional learning experiences. Teachers will have a choice of compensated content-focused sessions June-July that are aligned to the district’s strategic plan goals. 

Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources and Special Projects, summarized the 2022-2023 Employee Contract timeline. Employee contracts will be emailed April 19, 2022, to employees through Frontline. The deadline for employees to electronically sign and submit contracts is May 11, 2022.

Adam LeJeune, Directory of Technology, announced the two website vendor finalists, Finalsite and Apptegy. Both have modern, award-winning design and features and provide functionality upgrades over current website. BigThought was chosen as the District’s Implementation Partner (DIP) for the Additional Day School Year Summer Learning Program (ADSY) providing scope and sequence and curriculum-aligned activities. Funds from TCLAS 8a and 8c, which were provided to the district for additional operational funds to use at the District’s discretion.

The 2022-2023 Budget Workshop was outlined by Lawrence Galloway, Chief Operating Officer, reflecting an increase in federal funds. The projected revenue is $11,635,752.50. Increased budgets included child nutrition and maintenance. Projected salaries by function were also presented.

With no further business, Board member Byrleen Terry moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Misty Ehlers.
