Marlin ISD holds convocation

The Marlin High School Auditorium was filled with purple and gold on Aug. 1 as the Board of Managers, administrators, teachers, and staff attended the annual Back to School Marlin ISD Convocation. Niki Edwards, Executive Director of Academics, opened the session with shout-outs to the various city, county, and local notables. Each campus was highlighted in individual amusing videos illustrating its school year visions from “All gas, no brakes,” “Level up,” to “Big Dawg Status.”

In approaching the upcoming school year, Superintendent Dr. Darryl Henson shared reflections on the impact of change: “One can’t do the same thing, the same way and expect change, often traditions can stand in the way of progress, and feedback is the breakfast of champions”.  Dr. Henson noted a community challenge that everyone must be part of the solution with self-ownership. He stated, “It’s time to “Stay ten toes down” as the game will be a test of not on them but what’s in them.”

Capturing the hearts and attention of the audience, Ethan Smith, fourth grade, Elijah Roberson, sixth grade, A’Zarion Hopkins, seventh grade and Kason Grant, eighth grade, represented their peers as they eloquently spoke on the need for the teachers to believe in the students and one another followed by a standing endorsement.

After a brief overview of the State of Texas mastery level variables to include achievement, growth, and number of students in the mastery level, Niki Edwards acknowledged and awarded the 2021-2022 Marlin ISD Top Performing Teachers: Janice Carroll, 7th grade Marlin Middle School, English Language Arts & Reading, Eula Mae Jones, fifth grade, Marlin Elementary School, Mathematics, Monet Washington, third and fifth grades English Language Arts & Reading, Dametra Holloway, eighth grade Marlin Elementary, Mathematics, and Suzanne Kluck, Kindergarten Self-Contained. Monet Washington was awarded for her third grade students as 90 percent top mastery performance.
