Marlin ISD Pre-K reading on track

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met May 17 in the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson presiding.  Board Managers present were Misty Ehlers, Byrleen Terry, and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent of Schools. 

Lawrence Galloway presented the Lone Star Governance Awards: Student of the Month - LaKreshia Stocks, Teach of the Month - Brandon Mugrage and Employee of the Month - Dr. Stacy Parker. 

The Superintendent’s Report opened with the Lone Star Governance Goal Progress by Patrice Woodson, Director of Academics, noted Pre-K students reading on track by the end of Pre-K will increase from 36 to 80 percent by May 2025. Pre-Kindergarteners are Kindergarten ready. #BulldogsREADChallenge was encouraged. The 2025 Strategic Measures for Pre-K were made through walk-throughs and teachers are teacher phonics. Lawrence Galloway, Chief Operating Officer, illustrated growth in Math for fourth/fifth grade. He emphasized the importance of instructional support and 80 percent of the lesson plans are aligned with curriculums. In addition, Galloway reported by the fifth six weeks the average attendance was 787.

The financial state of the district is in a good place whereas about $2 million is still due from the State. Under child nutrition, there is a proposal to include a dinner program for the next school year, which for some of the students, would be their last meal of the day.

The district has an interlocal agreement for assessment and collection of taxes including delinquents. The renewal is July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, with annual district payments of $8789. Jesse Bustamante, Director of HR and Special Education, announced Marlin ISD has been awarded funding to participate in the Grow Your Own Program. This program is designed to facilitate increased entry of qualified, diverse candidates into the teaching profession. Six names have been submitted. Patrice Woodson sought approval plans to purchase PE and Health materials from QuaverEd, grades K-5 and Goodheart-Willcox, grades 9-12.

Byrleen Terry moved to approve all consent agenda items. Motion carried. The Board of Managers transitioned into closed session re: proposed nonrenewal of Claude Keith Kelley’s term employment contract.
