MISD board discusses naming of facilities

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met Feb. 7 at the Marlin Middle School Library.

President Billy Johnson presided. Board Managers present were Byrleen Terry, Misty Ehlers, and Superintendent Dr. Darryl Henson.

After returning from closed session, the floor was opened for public comments, which included citizens’ concerns regarding procedures for providing meals for athletes when traveling to out-of-town games. Most public comments were focused on the fate of the suspended coach.

Henson reminded the commentators that the rights and privacy of personnel must be respected. He also stated that he appreciated their concerns, felt the frustrations and all information is not out there. It was noted since his leadership, this is the first Board meeting with public comments and encouraged the attendees to continue the level of interest across the board, not just about athletics. Henson volunteered and asked his cabinet to remain at the end of the meeting to listen to additional parent concerns.

Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources and Special Education, shared updates on the Multipurpose Activity Complex (MAC). Pending weather conditions, the completion date has been extended to Feb. 20, 2022.

The employees’ contract timeline for 2022-2023 was presented. Contracts should be received by April 25 with the signing deadline of May 11, 2022.

Naming the gymnasium and renaming Legion Field was discussed. Because there is no Board policy available for naming facilities, guidelines were presented for committee to consider: process for board approval, criteria, guidelines, renaming facilities vs new facilities, dedication, memorials, ceremony, plaques, and naming recommendations.

With no further business, Byrleen Terry moved to adjourn the meeting.
