MISD board discusses several topics

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson presiding.  Board Managers present were Byrleen Terry and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent of Schools. Board member Misty Ehlers was not in attendance.

The Lone Star Governance Student of the Month was awarded to fifth grader Ce’Mariya Wright, daughter of Ceaira Kelly and Delvin Wright. Teacher of the Month was presented to Dietra Harris (MES), and Employee of the Month Nikisha Edwards, Executive Director of Academics. Board of Managers went into closed session re: pursuant to Texas Government Code 551.074, deliberation of personnel matters.  

After the Board returned from closed session, Superintendent’s Reports followed. 

Niki Edwards presented the second six weeks academic data. The 2022-23 Campus Performance Goals include 70 percent STAAR approaches Grade Level, 55 percent STAAR meets Grade Level and 20 percent STAAR Masters Grade Level. Intentional priorities are Fourth Grade Reading/Math, Sixth-Eighth Grade English Language Arts and Reading. (ELAR) and Marlin High School, English I/II and Algebra I.

In other matters, Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources/Special Projects, presented promotion of extra-and co-curricular activities to parents and the community through social media, school newsletter and school messenger. Student participation and club sponsors were two immediate needs. Two new offerings include a Drumline Club and Music Club. 

Marlin ISD Financial Report was presented by Dr. Henson. The General Fund YTD revenue was $4,986,717. Food Service ($192,374) and Investment Reports ($4,136,886.62) were presented. It was noted the district is compliant with its investment policy according to the 1987 Public Fund Investment Act. 

The 2021-2022 Auditor’s Report presented by Singleton, Clark & Company, PC representative. The opinion of the financial statements appeared within the Independent Auditor’s Report as Unmodified. The board approved to continue partnering with Workers’ Compensation Solutions which provides services for medical cost, lost wages, and disability payments for claims and approved the renewal contract with Frontline education, a vendor for school administration software used to proactively manage human resources and business operations. 

Other items approved were: Byrleen Terry, Ian Geisler and John Barnett as the Falls County Appraisal District Board of Directors for 2023-2024; budget amendment to transfer funds to the appropriate function to address any over-extended accounts and /or accurately align finances to achieve goals re: TEA; and resolution canvassing the returns and declaring the results of the bond election. Billy Johnson moved to approve the consent agenda items. 

Superintendent Henson thanked the community coming together for passing of the bonds.  

It was noted Niki Edwards will represent Marlin ISD at the National Alliance of Black School Educators conference Dec. 2 in Washington, DC. Marlin Elementary School, one of four schools, was recognized as a National Demonstration School.  The other recipients were Kramer Middle School and Anacostia High School (Washington, DC) and Justice High School (Falls Church Virginia).
