MISD board meets

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met Jan. 10 at the Marlin Middle School Library. President Billy Johnson presided. Board Managers present were Byrleen Terry and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent.

After the Board returned from closed session, Superintendent Reports were presented. Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources & Special Education, reported the Multipurpose Activity Complex (MAC) is progressing according to plan with a projected Feb. 14 completion date. 

Dr. Henson followed with a report on the AE Local Education Philosophy focusing on improvements for the second graders, ninth graders and college career/military readiness. 

Dr. Henson introduced the Pre-Bond Advisory Committee mission and noted WRA Architects, John Ervin General Contractor and STIFEL as architectural services and Bond advisors. Choices will include to either gut the high school or build from ground up. The pre-bond proposals will be presented at the Feb. 7 Board of Managers meeting.

J. Adam LeJeune, Director of Technology presented the Vision 2025 key strategic measures.  Internet/Wi-Fi exceeded the target at 95 percent uptime. Use of technology in the classroom reflected that comfort and fluency do not always go together. 

Niki Edwards, Marlin Middle School Principal, reported on the Elementary Early Childhood Literacy indicating a remarkable growth in kindergarten and first graders. Dr. Henson noted that due to the grade levels growth that students are more than capable when instructed and credited administration classroom walk-throughs and appraisals as effective tools.

Jesse Bustamante introduced the planning of the 2022-23 school calendar. A special committee of teachers, parents and the community will draft two calendars. After assessing each, the final school calendar will be submitted to the Board of Managers for approval. 

In addition, the 2022-2023 Wellness Plan was discussed. Bustamante noted the renewed contract of the Multi-Regional Purchasing Cooperative Interlocal Agreement allows substantial savings on food service and helps to provide students and staff to develop and maintain lifelong healthy living and eating. Barbara Brown, MISD Food Service Supervisor, was in attendance to address questions and concerns. With no consent items, Byrleen Terry moved the meeting adjourn.
