MPD, Sheriff’s Office arrest robbery suspect

A suspect has been released on bond following a robbery in Marlin on Friday, May 31. Marlin Police and the Falls County Sheriff’s Office apprehended the suspect, Rafael Hernandez, 22, of Marlin, just a few hours after the report of the incident. Falls County Sheriff Ricky Scaman reported that on Friday, May 31, at approximately 5 p.m., the Marlin Police Department received a call of a robbery in progress at AJ’s Chevron Drive Thru located at 403 Live Oak in Marlin. Chief of Police Nathan Sodek stated that his dispatch broadcast the information and dispatched officers to the scene. Scaman was just a few blocks away as was Chief Deputy Derick Johnson. Both responded to the broadcast, according to Sodek. Scaman arrived on scene to find that several patrons and the clerk were holding an individual against a car. The individual was identified as Hernandez. Scaman held the individual at gunpoint as Johnson quickly arrived and took Hernandez into custody. Sodek reported that Marlin PD Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies began to investigate the robbery and found that Hernandez had entered a back room of the convenience store and removed cartons of cigarettes valued at several hundred dollars. Hernandez put them in a backpack he had with him. As Hernandez attempted to leave the store, the clerk approached him and tried to stop him. Hernandez broke free dragging the clerk outside and onto the concrete pavement. Eventually a customer of the store would come to the rescue followed by several other customers who were able to gain control over Hernandez and hold him until Scaman arrived on scene.
