Old Settlers & Veterans receive honor awards from Preservation Texas

The Old Settlers & Veterans Association of Falls County was recently honored by Preservation Texas at their Central Texas Regional Preservation Summit held in San Marcos, Texas on Sept. 21.

They received two Honor Awards in recognition outstanding efforts to save two endangered Texas Landmarks for the benefit of future generations.

The historic 1840s Morrell log cabin, restored in 2023 and the 1914 tabernacle, restored in 2018 are located at the Old Settlers & Veterans of Falls County reunion grounds at Tomlinson Hill between Lott and Marlin.

Gail Wideman Palmore (Executive Director and Tomlinson descendant) and Steve Palmore accepted the awards.

The association sponsors Texas history days for area school children and the public as well as programs to honor veterans. Efforts are continuing to improve the grounds, picnic areas and to build a nature trail and plant bluebonnets.

The 18-acre site is available for rent and has restrooms with showers as well as RV hookups. Many families from throughout Texas come for family reunions, weddings and camping.
