Report shows Marlin ISD student’s progress

The Marlin ISD Board of Managers met Jan. 24 at the Marlin Middle School Library with President Billy Johnson presiding. Board Managers present were Byrleen Terry, Misty Ehlers and Dr. Darryl Henson, Superintendent. In recognition of Board Appreciation Month, Board members were presented gift baskets by the campus administrators for their continued dedication to excellence in the school district. 

Dr. Stacy Parker, Director of Academics & Special Education, presented the district’s Texas Academic Performance Report for 2020-2021. Due to the state declared disaster, there were no ratings. 

Based on statistics, MISD students are progressing in the areas of reading, science, and social studies. She also gave updates on the Lone Star Governance goal progress measures. Seniors participated in the TSI English and Math proficiency practice tests designed to help prepare for the Texas Success Initiative Assessment. Vision 2025 key strategic measures the industry-based curriculum. Presently MHS has three career certification programs, Cosmetology, Welding and Entrepreneurship. Jesse Bustamante, Director of Human Resources & Special Education, reported the Multipurpose Activity Complex (MAC) is progressing according to plan, with weather pending, Feb. 14 is the projected completion date.  Lawrence Galloway, Chief Operating Officer, reported the district is financially on target with expenses.

Consent agenda items approved were the AE Local Education Philosophy revisions focusing on improvements for the second graders, ninth graders and college career/military readiness and the renewed contract of the Multi-Regional Purchasing Cooperative Interlocal Agreement which allows substantial savings on food service and helps to provide students and staff to develop and maintain lifelong healthy living and eating. To cultivate and improve school culture, through federal grant funds, the Board approved the purchase of 61 Capturing Kids’ Hearts teaching modules. 

Based on the module research, five key indicators should reflect improvement: Fewer discipline referrals, improved attendance, higher student achievement, lower dropout rates and high teacher satisfaction. Jesse Bustamante introduced the 2022-23 school calendar for approval. School will start Aug. 3, 2022, and end May 19, 2023. 

The Board also approved Board Policy BED (Local) Revision that public comment be limited and items on the agenda should be posted with the notice of the meeting. With no further business, Byrleen Terry moved the meeting adjourn.
