Rotary: First aid kits for elementary school students’ homes

School nurses serve in a pivotal role that bridges healthcare and education. The Texas Department of State Health Services Board of Nursing states, “school nursing is a professional RN specialty. The RN has the educational preparation and critical thinking skills as well as clinical expertise which are essential to nursing in the school setting.”

Judy Morrow is the School Nurse at Marlin Elementary School. As the main health contact in the elementary school setting, she addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social health needs of these young students.

On March 24, at Marlin Elementary School, Rotary Club in Marlin joined hands with Nurse Judy and elementary school students’ mothers to help out in the area of children’s scrapes and cuts, because unintentional injuries can happen in the blink of an eye. Kids are most susceptible to injuries and accidents, on or off the school grounds.

The Rotary Club presented School Nurse Judy with first aid kits to distribute to young students of Marlin Elementary School to take home.

Nurse Judy knows the best way to handle an unintentional injury is to be prepared before it happens. First Aid kits act as an indispensable medical item for all. When one knows how to respond in an emergency and has the supplies needed, a nurse, mother, or adult family member is confident and can respond effectively.

From slight abrasion to severe injuries, these kits can help lessen the possibility of infection and the extent of wounds. A typical first aid kit has equipment that can treat burns, contusions, cuts, strains, and other types of injuries. Providing First Aid treatment for such injuries as cuts, scrapes, and burns reduces the risk of getting an infection and can help to reduce the severity. This could help a wound to heal much faster.

A well-stocked first-aid kit, kept within easy reach, is a must for every school classroom, activity area, and home. Keeping alcohol swabs, cotton balls, gauze, plaster strips, crepe bandage, dressings, antiseptic cream, etc., are some of the essentials that should be in a First Aid Kit.

At home or abroad, Rotary focuses on the health of mothers and children. Rotary focuses on high-quality health care for vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger.

Rotary Club in Marlin extends its appreciation to Nurse Judy, all school nurses, educators, counsellors, cafeteria personnel, property maintenance staff, transportation personnel, administration, and operations support staff at MISD for taking care of our community’s children at school.
