St. Paul AME Church Marlin hosts backpack giveaway

Saturday July 30, St. Paul AME Church Marlin was again the host site of their annual back to school backpack/school supply give away. St. Paul under the leadership of Rev. Eddie Ellis Jr. along with sponsors Angels of Mercy (Waco), Hopeful Lodge #78, Order of the Eastern Star, Walmart, Salvation Army and numerous volunteers, coordinated efforts and gave time and were able to gift over 100 children with backpacks to start the new school year.

According to Ellis, the reason for continuing to do this give away each year is simple, “the need is so great in our community, it is an honor to be able to serve those in need, especially the children. In light of all the situations our country is facing including the economic crisis, and the ongoing pandemic, families shouldn’t have to choose between buying food for their household, or school supplies for their children.”

Grateful parents and reluctant children were greeted in the sanctuary of the church to pews organized into different grade levels each holding the much needed and appreciated backpacks and school supplies. As a special treat Pre-K and Kindergarten children also received nap time throws.

Grandparent Audrey Benson echoed the sentiment of Ellis. According to Mrs. Benson, “this event helps me because I am helping to raise 4 grandchildren in different grade levels.  Being on a fixed income, now I don’t have to worry about school supplies.”

While parent Olanda Smith was thankful for the new backpack her son 1st grade student sported, D’marion  on the other hand wasn’t so excited about school beginning. According to the first grader, “ I’m  not excited about school starting; The 1st grader said he’s not nervous or scared, I’m just not ready to go back to school.”

The generosity did not end with the backpacks. Parents and students were treated to a hamburger or hot dog lunch that included drinks, chips, and a sweet treat prepared by the volunteers turned cooks.

Rev. Ellis shared that event’s like this will continue at St Paul as long as the need in the community is there and the and the support from partners and volunteers who gave of their time continues.
