American Legion Riders motorcycle show brings enthusiasts to downtown

The 2019 American Legion Riders Post 31 Motorcycle Show was held in conjunction with the Lion’s Club 2019 Annual Automobile Car Show on Saturday, June 8, in a fun, family-oriented outdoor arena, the Downtown Marlin Falls County Courthouse Square. This year’s motorcycle show was held in honor of American Legion Post 31 Commander Michael Joseph Estep (aka, First Baptist Church Marlin’s Pastor Mike, deceased). This year’s show again brought committed motorcycle enthusiasts, a showcase of two major manufacturing models, and custom motorcycles - vehicles that have been tarted up or even been built from scratch by their owners. “They are like works of art,” author Jim Cathey said. One thing that makes a motorcycle show interesting is that motorcycling is a moving target. Technology is always evolving, and consumer tastes and needs change over time. Here are two motorcycles on display at the show that represent the industry’s past and, perhaps, its future (see above). Each configuration offers either specialized advantage or broad capability; each design creates a different riding posture. It is interesting that the dual saddle or benchseat is commonly used on most motorcycles. But, through the 1930s, motorcycles were for single riders and featured a single seat. Today, a solo saddle is used on racing motorcycles, off-road motorcycles, and certain historic motorcycles. Recent years has seen an increase in popularity of motorcycles. High fuel prices and urban congestion have been factors. For many riders, however, a motorcycle is a great stress reliever. In a new neurobiological Study funded by HD, a team of researchers found that riding a motorcycle reduced hormonal biomarkers of stress. Riding also increased alertness, similar to drinking coffee.
