Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Beta Nu Chapter at Texas Area 8 Luncheon
Special to The Democrat
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.
Beta Nu Chapter was organized November 2, 1935, at Marlin, Texas, by Founder and Alpha State Executive Secretary, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton. Beta Nu Chapter was ceded Falls, Miliam, Robertson, Leon, and Madison Counties as membership territory. Miss Sagnes Peyton was Beta Nu’s first President. Beta Nu’s first chapter meeting was held February 8, 1936, in the Falls Hotel.
On May 3, 2025, members/ officers Shirley Wilson, Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, Letitia Estep, and Phyllis Macmillan attended the DKG Texas State Organization’s Area 8 Luncheon at the Stillwell Retirement Residence, in Waco TX. Dr. Lisa Rogers, Area 8 Coordinator, was the facilitator and hostess. A fine taco salad with fixings, cheesecake, and iced tea were served. Each member was provided a watercolor set complete with easel, paints, brushes, palette, and canvas. The art experience was painting a watercolor that incorporated the soaring balloon emblem of the Texas State Organization’s Convention.
Leading women educators towards impacting education worldwide, the Founders of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International created a list of five purposes which were intended to guide the organization. This number later grew to seven. These purposes are as relevant today as they were in 1929: 1) to unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship; 2) to honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education; 3) to advance the professional interest and position of women in education; 4) to initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators; 5) to endow awards to aid members in pursuing personal and professional growth and to provide grants to non-member educators; 6) to stimulate the personal and professional development of members and to encourage their participation in relevant programs of action, and; 7) to inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively to support a sustainable world society.
The colors of Delta Kappa Gamma are crimson and gold – red for courage and gold for loyalty to members and to the ideals of the Society. The DKG rose is a natural creation that reflects beauty of mind and spirit. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International has more than 90,000 members in over 2,900 chapters throughout 18 member countries, which include Canada, Norway, Sweden, Mexico, Finland, Guatemala, Iceland, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Great Britain, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany, Estonia, Panama, Japan, and the United States. Each member has access to a limitless sphere of influence.
