Hobby Unit Prisoners Make Quilts for Foster Children
Children in the foster care system in Falls, Milam and Robertson Counties will be snuggling up with handmade quilts and pillowcases thanks to the loving labor of prisoners at the William P. Hobby Corrections Unit in Marlin.
According to a Facebook post by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) on Oct. 10, the Stitches of Love and Hope Quilting Program at the Hobby Unit recently donated 40 handmade quilts and 30 handmade pillowcases to Departments of Family Services.
“Each quilt is made with love, prayer, and purpose,” the post said. “As the ladies carefully select fabrics and stitch each design, they say a prayer for the child who will receive it. With every stitch, their thoughts and hopes are woven into the fabric — creating more than a blanket, but a symbol of care and compassion.”
TDCJ thanked the many individuals who have donated supplies and materials to make this project possible at the conclusion of their post.
“This program would not be possible without your generosity. Together, we are stitching love, hope, and healing into the lives of others.”
Keep an eye on next week’s paper for a followup story about the origin of Hobby Unit’s Stitches of Love and Hope Quilting Program and how to donate or get involved with this initiative.
