Edward Martin Filar of Bremond, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 at his residence at the age of 83 years old.
He was born to Louis and Victoria Filar on Oct. 8, 1934 in Bremond. He graduated from Bremond High School.
He attended St. Mary’s Seminary for a year in Houston, but that was not Gods plan. On Feb. 12, 1966 he married Cecilia Mary Wierzbicki Wilganowski in Bremond and gained three sons. They were married for 52 years. He loved Cecilia and adored her boys.
During their marriage they had a son, Mark who was stillborn in 1967. Then they had four girls. In 1983 Ed and Cecilia owned Filar Diner.For seven years the whole family worked from cooking to waiting tables. He also had a hay bailing company that was left to him by his father and bailed hay for many customers in Bremond and throughout the county. He loved his farm and would go sit out at the farm for hours. That was his man cave. Ed loved playing the guitar and was the last member of the Polish, Steve Okonski Band.
He was preceded in death by the following band members; Steve Okonski, Theodore Yanowski, Carroll Bashinski, and Jimmy Filar. If you knew Ed, you know he loved his scratch offs and he had his favorite numbers he played every week. He loved hanging out at A-1 and Springtime, visiting with everyone that came in.
Ed had lived in Bremond all his life and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He taught CCD and was a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Polish National Alliance for many years. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; aunt and uncle Stella and John Alexander; infant son Mark Filar; brother Jimmy Filar; and brother-in-law Archie Demny.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years: Cecilia Filar of Bremond; daughters Julie Wilson of Bremond, Lori McIntosh and husband Steve of Robinson, Dori Johnson and husband Kenneth of Bremond, and Linda Murphy and husband John of College Station; sons Fred Wilganowski and wife Lynn of Bremond, Donnie Wilganowski of Bremond, and David Wilganowski and wife Debbie of Houston; sisters Louise Demny and late husband Archy of Bremond and Frances Wishkoski and husband Andrew of Bremond; brothers Johnny Filar and wife Lilly of Magnolia, Dan Filar and wife Sugie of Bremond, and Tony Filar and wife Laverne of Spring.
He is further survived by 19 grandchildren: Dee Rekieta, Greg Rekieta, Gina Rekieta, Mackenzie Wilganowski, Ryan Wilganowski, Kimberly Ausmus, Kristin Hobbs, Jessica Willis, Eric Wilson, Tyler Wilson, Cecilia Wilson, Stephanie McIntosh, Tiffany McIntosh, Philip Johnson, Shelby Johnson, Katie Johnson, William Johnson, Mary Johnson, and Emma Murphy, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018 at Bremond Memorial Funeral Home and a rosary. Mass services were Thursday, March 1, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Celso Yu officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eric Wilson, Tyler Wilson, Greg Wilganowski, Philip Johnson, Ryan Wilganowski, and James Demny.
