J. Sydney Dann

J. Sydney Dann, DDS, 82, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, in Baton Rouge, La., after an extended illness with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).  He was born Jan. 23, 1940, in New Orleans, La., and grew up in Marlin.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was the only son of the late Mabel Summers Dann and the late John Sydney Dann.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Lillian Bond Dann; two daughters, Summer Dann and Sydney (Jaime) Betbeze; two step-daughters, Leslie (Kevin) Daigle and Suzanne (Jimmy) Ruckman; nine grandchildren, Hayleigh and Lewis Johnson; Mary Dann and Virginia Betbeze; Lauren Daigle (Brad) Bevilacqua, Emily Daigle (Karson) Riggs, Matthew Daigle; and A.J. and Reid Ruckman; two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Amelia Riggs; and Max, his special dog.

Syd was a graduate of Marlin High School, the University of Texas at Austin, and Loyola School of Dentistry.  He joined the U.S. Navy and served in Corpus Christi before moving to Baton Rouge, where he established a successful dental practice of 49 years. He is a past president and lifelong member of the Louisiana Dental Association.

Syd was an insatiable intellectual who pursued knowledge relentlessly throughout his life. He never met a stranger and forged friendships in every situation in which he found himself. He was an excellent joke- and story-teller, and was especially passionate about trains, ships, military knowledge, history, woodworking, and cooking. Of his many interests, it was his family that he loved the most. Towards the end of his life he especially enjoyed creole cream cheese and flan, visits from friends and family, and loved to hear Bible verses daily.

Special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga , especially MaryAnn, Ramona, Sherry, Sarah, Laura, and Bill Bond;  The Hospice of Baton Rouge, especially Katherine, Laurie, Ximaena, Kabrina, and Craig; and very special thanks to caregivers Dora and Marlene.
