Lena Ida Bethke Drews, 97, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Golden Years Nursing Home. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 28, at Grace Lutheran Church, Marlin with the Rev. Kurt Rutz officiating. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, January 27, at Adams Funeral Home. Lena was born February 26, 1919 in rural McLennan County to Edmond O. and Anna (Schroeder) Bethke. On October 12, 1940, she married Arthur Drews at Zion Lutheran Church, Otto. They made their home in Marlin most of their married life. She was a homemaker, and seamstress having made many a dress, including wedding and bridesmaid, and altered countless pairs of pants over the years. She had a special green thumb, loved gardening, was proud of her flowers, and raised chickens for many years. Her grandchildren and great grandkids loved to pick up eggs when they visited the “grandma with the chickens”. Lena was preceded in death by: her parents; her seven brothers and sisters; her husband; her son, William; daughter-in-law, Lena; and her greatgrandson, Christian. She is survived by her sons, Edward (Linda) of Newton, Leonard of Louisiana, Gene (and Jo Ann) of Marlin; and her daughter-in-law, Linda of Hewitt. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Kimberly Kennedy of Robinson and Tracey Rogers of Ft. Worth; and five grandsons, David of Guam, Jeffrey of Hewitt, Brian and Christopher of Keller, and Michael of Reagan; and 17 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Loverna Tucker, also survives her, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and “special friends”, Becky Weise and Debbie Drews. The family would like to give special thanks to the understanding and compassionate caregivers of Golden Years and Texas Quality Home Health Care. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Marlin.
