Virginia Curtis Amerine Potthoff
Virginia Curtis Amerine Potthoff, of Fort Worth, passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2021. She was surrounded by her beloved family and received into the arms of her Savior.
Virginia was born on March 2, 1929, in Freeport, to Clarence and Veta Amerine and grew up in Marlin and later in Waco. In Waco, she met the love of her life, James Allen Potthoff, and they were married on July 4, 1946. Their joyous 74-year journey as husband and wife took them to Dallas, Los Angeles, Spokane, Rochester NY, Detroit, Baltimore, and then back to Texas where they also lived in Grand Prairie, Arlington, Abilene, San Angelo and Fort Worth. Wherever she lived, Virginia made a warm, peaceful, loving home for her husband Jim, daughter Donna, and sons Joe and Brad … and all who came to visit.
A faithful Christian all her life, Virginia was an enthusiastic member of the many churches she and her family attended, including St. Peter Orthodox Church in her last years. Her devoted service, friendship, and countless covered dishes attracted admiration from all. Virginia’s affectionate ways -- and no less her lively wit and disarming candor -- made an indelible impression on family and friends. She will be a presence all their lives.
One of Virginia’s biggest joys for 50 years was as Grandmommy, Grammy, and Gigi to eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Special treats, games, and lots of undivided attention and love enriched the lives of the youngest in her family beyond measure. She counted herself no less privileged.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Jim Potthoff; daughter, Donna Latuszek; son, Joe Potthoff and his wife Dawn; son, Brad Potthoff and his wife Eugenia; and sister, Mary Hammer. Her grandchildren are Laura Moffett, Jill Latuszek, David Latuszek, Melanie Gamble, Melissa Clark, Mary Potthoff, and Matthias Potthoff. Great-grandchildren are Emily Moffett, Amaya and DeeDee Latuszek, Holly and Clara Gamble, and Jackson Clark.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Amerine; brother, Clarence Amerine; and grandson, Michael Latuszek, on whose birthday Virginia fell asleep in the Lord.
St. Peter Orthodox Church of Fort Worth served the rites for the faithful departed, and her interment will take place at Perry Methodist Cemetary in Perry, where generations of her husband’s relatives rest.
“Into Thy hands, O merciful Savior, we commend the soul of Thy handmaid, Virginia, now departed from the body. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech Thee, a sheep of Thine own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of Thy mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the Saints in light. Amen.”
