The Tongue Is A Fire

Weekly Devotional

The Bible has a lot to say about the tongue. Probably because God knows how much trouble our tongues can get us into.

James says in James 1:19-""Wherefore my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath."

But , oh, will we ever learn?

Jesus says in Matthew 12:37-"For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

There was a story told of two boys that went to watch a Little League Baseball game together. The team they went to see was the same team that they both played for the summer before. As they sat in the bleachers, they began to critique the pitcher.

They said things like, "If that is as hard as that kid can throw the we could destroy him. Oh, that kid is so terrible!"

All of the sudden, a lady sitting in the bleachers tapped the boys on the shoulder and said, "Boys, that's my son that you are criticizing and I think is pretty good."

The boys realized there was no way they could take back what they had said.

I dare say that while we may not have been at that ball game, we too, can all recall a similar situation in which it was your tongue that offended.

Friend, we would all do ourselves a favor to be slow to speak.

James said in James 3:5--"Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth."

What a great lesson for all of us.
