The west was won with tenacity and grit

A few years back, my young bride Stella and I were invited to a paid gig in the Kanab, Utah, area and we left Texas a bit early to be a part of the Arizona Cowboy Poetry Gathering. We enjoyed waking up in the middle of August and find the temperature to be just like a mid-October morning. A breath of that fresh cool air is a great way to start the day, especially when you then take the time to thank the Good Lord for guiding your way, and giving you the strength to face the day, and the knowledge that He is in control of your life! It just don’t get any better than that! And to put icing on the cake, you find yourself among some great cowboy poets that not only listen to you and enjoy your poems, but will give you advice on how to improve your presentations by their example and expertise. As I have said in earlier columns, Texas is extremely important as subject matter in stories, poems, and songs, as well as providing people in all walks of life in important roles throughout Americana. However, the cowboy poetry venue has a strong influence in our western states. An amazing number of towns and cities host many Cowboy Poetry and Western Music Gatherings. They invite some of the better-known cowboy poets and always include some younger and aspiring cowboy poets. The formats are varied, but you can be sure of hearing a lot of cowboy music, stories, and poems. The invited poets are usually sponsored by one of the gathering’s supporters. This ranges from providing lodging to a small amount of cash to help with travel expenses.
