Lady Bulldogs defeat Lady Tigers for top spot

The Marlin Bulldogs were previously in a three-way tie for the top spot in the district, but now they're the only remaining undefeated team.

Tuesday’s bout against the Bremond Tigers knocked the visiting team down to second place, with Marlin coming out victorious at a final score of 49-18.

Just as in the past, the Marlin girls knocked it out of the park within the first quarter. The visiting team struggled to get points on the board as the Marlin defense went to work. For some reason, the Tigers’ defensive players couldn’t seem to keep up the steam as the Lady Bulldogs sank basket after basket.

The second quarter started at 3-15 and the Bulldogs only continued to dominate the court. The well-coached girls went to work, with Yasmen Maxwell, Aniya Williams, Kendria Mason and Talia Davis scoring multiple points for their team. The Tigers managed to add a few measly points to the board, but the teams went into half-time with the Bulldogs a full 21 points ahead, at 29-8.

Bremond took the ball at the start of the third quarter but was quick to lose it to the opposing team. The Marlin girls managed to not once, not twice, but seven times before the Tigers added anything to their mediocre score. With only 6 additional points from Bremond, the Lady Dogs again came out on top by the end of the quarter because of their 11 additional points.

Even though the Bremond girls knew the match was no longer theirs, they seemed to come back with renewed energy in the last quarter, with the defense succeeding in blocking the Bulldogs just as the Lady Dogs did them the entire game. The section was rather eventful, despite the few points made. With a three-pointer from Maxwell, the only one of the evening, the Bulldogs cemented their 31-point win. Both she and Aniya Williams were stand-out on the scoreboards, but two teammates look to be catching up to their peers.

Senior Amyah Mason and Freshman Shawna Robinson fell just behind the team’s star players’ stats on the scoreboards. Mason, who has been on the Marlin team throughout her high school career, rocked out eight points, where she averaged 60 percent of her total shots and 50 percent of her free throws. The senior also managed to perform seven offensive rebounds and three defensive ones, nabbing a total of ten rebounds, all the while there’s no turnovers found.

Robinson, who has only played a total of 13 games at the high school level, scored seven points with 50 percent shots made. She made four offensive rebounds, stole the ball four times, and only had one turnover.

The Bulldogs, who sit 3-0 in district and 11-4 overall, will travel to play the Wortham Bulldogs (0-1) later today, January 15 at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.worthamisd.org/289730_2.
