Lady Bulldogs suffer second loss of the season

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to La Vega this week to take on the Pirates in a non-district match where they put up a barking fight, but ultimately played the part of the underdogs.

The Bulldogs took the tipoff, but La Vega quickly hit the scoreboard with a two-pointer. After a foul on the Pirates, Marlin’s Aniya Williams sank two free throws, catching up to the home team.

The USC signee scored a total of nine points throughout the game; five free throws and two double pointers. Fellow captain Yasmen Maxwell was the only one to match her, succeeding in adding 10 points to the board. The senior, set to attend UMHB in the fall of 2021, scored four two-pointers and two free throws. Senior Amyah Mason and freshman Shawna Robinson contributed four points each.

Half-time had La Vega ahead by a mere three points, but the Pirates dug in deep through the third and fourth quarters to come out on top. Though they took the ball at the top of the quarter, Marlin was the first to score, with Williams tying the score. After four baskets from the Pirates, the Bulldogs managed to net another ball before the start of the fourth quarter. It began at 20-30, but the Pirates stormed through that one as well.

Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs showed their stripes on the court. Williams came out as the all-star, with 15 total rebounds, seven steals, and two blocks. Junior Kendria Trotter wasn’t too far behind, with five rebounds, two steals, and four turnovers. Maxwell was a standout as well, with three rebounds, three steals, eight turnovers, one block, and the only assist of the night.

After their bout against the Robinson Rockets was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns at the opposing school, the fighting Bulldogs are ready to redeem themselves in their next home game on Dec. 29 against the Connally Cadets.
