Bulldogs running down competition on the track

The Marlin Bulldog and Lady Bulldog track teams participated in the McCreight Relays at Whitney High School on March 11. Many athletes brought home medals and ribbons, as did multiple overall teams. Athletes rivaled competing teams from Groesbeck, Keene Smith, and Whitney High Schools.

The Boys Varsity team came home with a number of first place accomplishments. Senior Tydae Mayes took the top spot in the long jump and second place in the 400-meter dash. Trajon Butler brought home the gold in the 100-meter dash, as did Derion Gullette in the Discus competition. The 4x100-meter relay team made up of Mayes, Butler, Gullette, and freshman Jeoffrey Mims also brought home first place accolades. The team came up short in team scores, but the varsity boys put in their all. 

The Boys Junior Varsity team brought home the gold overall, with 129 total team points. Marlin dominated the scoreboards throughout the meet. The 100-meter dash was won by Isaiah Davis, while Keyshawn Thomas took second place by a mere 0.06 seconds. William Workman brought home the gold in the 400-meter dash and Ke’Untre Thomas followed just two seconds later with a bronze. Workman kept his stamina through the 800-meter dash, taking another first place medal with him. Teammate Mario Hopwood came in fourth place. Both the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays were won by the team of Thomas, Davis, Hopwood, and Desmond Woodson Jr. 

Field events were no different, as the Bulldogs continued to govern the field. The shot put competition was won by Issac Kelly, while Kenneth Hayes Jr. came right behind him. Hayes came in third in the discus competition as well. Thomas took the gold in the Long Jump with an impressive 17”4.5 jump, with Davis on his tail. Workman took third on the triple jump.

The Girls Varsity team came in third place overall. The 100-meter dash was taken by senior Kendra Hayes while Messiah McGowan prevailed through the 200-meter dash. The 100-meter hurdles - 33” were won by Taliyah Davis while Kedria Trotter took second in the 300-meter Hurdles - 30”. The relay team consisting of Davis, Hayes, Aleighseya Washington, and Aniya Williams took first place in the 4x100 relay. Hayes, Davis, Williams and McGowan did the same in the 4x200 relay. The 4x400 relay took team members Trotter, Williams, Leneshia Massington, and Angelina Perdigone into third place. 

Marlin took over the ranks of the field event. Senior Amyah Mason took second place on shot put with a 27.5 foot throw, while her teammates Yasmen Maxwell and Charlesetta “Charlie” Lewis took third and fourth. Mason also came in third in the discus competition. Washington brought home golds in both the long and triple jump competitions and Trotter took third in the Long Jump.

The Girls Junior Varsity team took the silver in the overall competition. Akeela McGee took third in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Teammate Shariya Womack followed just behind her in the 400-meter. 

The girls prevailed through the field events, taking top spots in shot put, discus, and the long jump. Saniya Suiters was the shot put champion with a 27’4 throw, while Brianna McCraw took second and Shakyla Simpson took third. Suiters and McCraw replicated their results in the discus competition, bringing home two more medals. Womack dominated the long jump with 12’1 leap while McGee came in just inches behind for the second place spot. 

The next meet will take place on Thursday, March 18 at 4 p.m. at La Vega High School.
